TARTA GUINNESS / chocolate guinness cake

¡MUSICA, MAESTRO!

Two Door Cinema Club – What You Know

ENGLISH VERSION

Last weekend some friends of us, came to our house and Lauri surprised us making a delicious cake. I haven't been able to avoid writing it down in my blog. It's incredible!  it's the best medicine for helping us back to school, work, boss, cold,... and that's why I need to share with you, guys!

I'm pretty sure that next weekend most of you would have the cake into theirs ovens. ¡BE CAREFUL! as it is very lightly, it will dissapear without realising it. You will tell me...

What do you think about the result? It shape reminds one of a pint of guinness, isn't it? well, if you taste it you will love it!! This cake rocks!

MAESTRO, PLEASE!

Two Door Cinema Club – What You Know
This time I recommend you an Norther Ireland alternative rock band, their music fits perfectly with this "beer". Besides fitting perfectly with the cake, it's also a band that Jon played us last New Year's Eve and I loved it. I dedicate it to him, who besides is this recipe's photographer...

ESTIMATED COOKING TIME
90 minutes
DIFFICULTY LEVEL
Easy
INGREDIENTS (6-8 SERVINGS)

SPONGE CAKE
- 250 ml draught guinness (any dark beer)
- 250 gr butter
- 75 gr cocoa in powder form
- 250 gr all-purpose flour
- 200-400 gr sugar (it depends on whether you have a sweet tooth ;)
- 2 teaspoon and a half bicarbonate
- 140 ml cream to be whipped
- 2 eggs
- a splash or a teaspoon vanilla syrup (as an option)
FROSTING
- 1 cream cheese cup (300 gr)
- 150 gr confectioners' sugar (white sugar could be also used)
- 360 ml cream to be whipped
DIRECTIONS
SPONGE CAKE
First of all, in a pot, pour 250 ml dark beer (draught guinness). Cook over low heat, avoiding it to come to a boil.

IMPORTANT! don't let guinness come to a boil or cake will not be spongy.

BITS AND PIECES: Did you know that... if you open a container of  draught guinness you'll find a small hollow plastic sphere inside? It's known as widget, and was patented in Ireland by Guinness. Other beers have copied Guinness. The aim of the floating widget inside cans of beer is to manage the characteristics of the beer's head. The frothy foam on tom of liquid beer after it is poured in a glass, is produced by bubbles of carbon dioxide rising to the surface.

Then, add 250 gr of butter melting it.

Meanwhile, mix the cocoa, flour and sugar (we used 200 gr) and bicarbonate into a bowl. We'll obtaina dry mix.

Finally, in the mixer glass, mix cream, eggs and vanilla syrup. Whisk the mixing over low power.

Then, add the mixing of guinness and butter and beat it.

Finally, add the dry mixing of flour, cocoa, etc. beating it until the mixing is uniform, liquid and glossy.  Pour the mixing into a baking tin, previously spread whether with butter or lard.

TRICK TO AVOID AN STICKY SPONGE CAKE
Gently turn whether butter or lard into a baking pan (oil is not recommended because of its strong taste). Use a towel of paper to spread it well. Then, add flour, spread it and get rid of the unnecessary flour.

Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Bake for 50 minutes in the preheated oven. As ovens are all different, to look through sponge cake is needed. When crust is browned, cover it with aluminum foil, so as to avoid burning it and to help cooking the bottom. In orther to be sure  sponge cake bottom is properly done, prick the cake with a needle and check whether it's still wet or not. If it's still wet, let sponge cake in the oven for a moment.

FROSTING
Use a fork or a mixer for mixing the cream cheese with 150 gr of sugar (confectioners' sugar  is preferred but you could use white sugar) to obtain a soft cream.  Then, add cream, previously whipped, and mix the frosting softly until you obtain an oily cream. Instead of whipping the cream, you could add only a shot of cream and mix it with cheese and sugar. The less cream, the less sweet and more liquid the frosting will be. It taste delicious too. The more you try, the fitter for you it will be.

This frosting is delicious and what is great is the contrast with the sponge cake.

RECOMMENDATIONS

A glass of Dolce Gusto Nesquik is the best drink to come with this great piece of cake.

  2. ¡Hola Almu!
